What We are Learning
Our theme for the month of April is Ocean. We will be learning about ocean life, as well as other literacy and numeracy activities will involve ocean life.
In the month of April we are continue to do Writer’s Workshop. This will give us the opportunity to use our knowledge of the alphabet to begin writing. We use the sounds we know to help us write, so it is okay to see spelling errors. It is often difficult at this age for many children to hear the middle sounds of words, so you often just see the beginning and ending sounds. I am very excited to see what the students are going to write about!
In Math, we’ll learning about 2D and 3D shapes and graphing.
Notes
Please continue to send your child with mittens/gloves, slush pants, and toque. It is beautiful outside, so we are enjoying playing outside and need to stay warm and dry! Make sure your child bring spare clothes to school in case they get wet from the puddles.
On Thursday, April 25 from 4:30-6:30pm, the school is hosting a Family Night. There will be various numeracy and literacy games that night for all grades, as well the Scholastic book fair will be open. More details will come in the following weeks. I hope to see you all there!

What We are Learning
This month our theme will be looking at First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures. We will have a great month learning about their games, traditions, their stories, and other aspects of their culture.
In Math, we are working on representing numbers in different ways. For example, we will learn that 5 is composed of 2 and 3 or 4 and 1. This will help us learn addition and subtraction. We will also work on creating our own patterns and extending them.
During our Literacy time, we will continue to read stories and retell important parts. We have been enjoying Writers Workshop to draw and write our stories. The Units of Study in Phonics will help us “turtle talk” words so we can write even more! “Turtle talking” allows us to stretch out the sounds in words to help us write them. Our spelling may not be correct, but we are learning and trying our best! This month we learn about the letters Q, Y, V, and Z.

Participation is certainly optional where students can bring a loonie donation in exchange for wearing a hat or bringing a stuffie for the day. This month the proceeds will go directly to the Lamont County Food Bank. Staff will also be joining in by donating a loonie to wear jeans for the day. Our first Loonies4Lamont will be on Wednesday, February 6.

In Math, we continue to work on patterns and making them more complex by given the core 3 elements (eg. AAB). For example, frog frog rabbit (core), frog frog rabbit, frog frog rabbit. Also, we continue to practice counting and recognizing sets at a glance.

What We Are Learning
Numeracy
Our class is working hard on number recognition, and on recognizing a set of numbers at a glance- without having to count each individual part of the set. We will be using Power of Ten cards to play games. This will be very exciting to see the students learn the rules and to see how they are learning to subitize, or recognize a set at a glance.
Literacy
We will continue to work on letter recognition. Please continue to talk about the letters in your child’s name, in the stories you read to them, on labels, and other places in their environment.
We have begun working on recognizing words that rhyme. Rhyming is an important component to reading readiness. For example, it helps them break words down into familiar parts. This month we will be looking at the letters B, L, J, and E.
Notes
Please remember to send your child with proper winter gear every day, as we do continue to play outside. A hat, mittens/gloves, warm coat, and snow pants are a must!
Our theme this month is Space. We will do various literacy and numeracy activities that relate to Space.

What We Are Learning
December is going to fly by! This month our theme is Christmas. Through the month, we will be reading Christmas stories, have Christmas themed centres, and completing various Christmas crafts and activities. We are learning the letters H, K, and B this month.
In Math, we will be working on counting and recognizing numbers from 0-10. Also, we will also be focusing on recognizing at a glance sets from 1-5. We will continue to make patterns. The students will be looking for and creating patterns that have a core of 2 or 3 elements that repeat. For example are: triangle, square,(the core) triangle, square, triangle, square…
During Read Alouds, we will be focussing on being able to answer questions about the stories, retelling, and making predictions. When you are reading with your child at home, ask them question throughout the story and at the end. For example, “who was in the story?”, “where were they?”, “what do you think will happen next?” etc.
Notes
As we continue to learn the letters of the alphabet, please support your child at home by talking about letters. Have them look for a certain letter when reading their library books, identify letters on various labels, sing the alphabet song, etc. I have attached other ideas for you.

A warm welcome to Lamont Elementary Kindergarten! We are looking forward to working with you to make this year one that will leave your children with the attitude that learning is exciting and that school is the next best place to home. We hope to provide an environment that is both stimulating and comfortable; one where your child is treated with respect and where he/she is expected to treat others with respect; a place that encourages your child to think, to discover, to care, to laugh.
Over the course of the school year, I will post newsletters and other important information here to keep you up to date with what is happening in Kindergarten.
I look forward to seeing you all!
